“Patience” captures a moment. The quiet tension just before action. A jumping spider, perfectly still, faces a small fly that has just landed within reach.
The spider’s abdomen is decorated with a flower, an evolved adornment that serves both as a lure and a disguise. This allows her to attract unsuspecting prey while dissolving seamlessly into the surrounding field. This hybrid form speaks to nature’s intelligence.
Patience is central to this scene. The spider has waited, still, for this instant when opportunity presents itself. The fly’s presence transforms stillness into inevitability. This piece exists in that narrow threshold between waiting and taking.
Originally inspired by a smaller, more whimsical spider I had created, this iteration shifts in tone. With the prey in frame, the scene becomes darker. This work ultimately reflects on nature’s timing, intelligent adaptation, and one’s willingness to act decisively when the opportunity arrives.
Alex Wolf is a storyteller, utilizing negative space to play with light and contour. Inspired by her daughter’s first experience of the natural world and her own childhood memories of eco-explorers, Wolf hand-cuts a whimsical narrative in paper.
Since 2018, Wolf has participated in numerous group exhibitions and live events nationwide. Her work has been collected by admirers both across the country and internationally. She continues to see the “positive” in negative space, and can be found experimenting in her studio most nights.
