Part of a body of work inspired by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, The Silk Scarf was composed with The Valpinçon Bather in mind. The cloth wrapped around the woman’s upper arm, the red-and-white scarf woven through her hair, and the relaxed curve of her spine all reference that masterwork.
While there is a formal sensibility to the composition the figure herself presents a subtle contradiction to that formality. She is completely relaxed- comfortable, casual, and at ease within her surroundings. She appears unselfconscious and fully at home in her own skin.
