When considering the theme Glimmer, I kept returning to the image of a solar eclipse; namely the moments around totality when the sun flickers and flares and the umbral bow sweeps the landscape resulting in a moment of darkness in the middle of the day. It's sort of a glimmer in reverse, a brief snag or interruption of light rather than its appearance, presenting a novel moment during the ordinary course of a day.A snag tree, meanwhile, is a dead or dying tree that provides an armature for new life and growth within a forest ecosystem; on which the owl is perched. This painting attempts to bring these two meanings of snag together, i.e., a brief interruption, and a structure through which new life emerges - both of which may play a role in making renewal possible.
