Like the painstaking illumination of a medieval manuscript, our contemporary rituals of beauty are acts of devotion. Illuminated manuscripts transformed sacred texts into objects of reverence through hours of meticulous labor; today, we devote a similar care to our own faces and bodies, carefully documenting, editing, presenting, and preserving our appearance for the world to see.
The medieval monk illuminated the page in service of the sacred. We illuminate ourselves.
In an age when beauty is endlessly photographed, curated, and worshipped, the body becomes both altar and artifact: an object to be perfected, displayed, and consumed.
