When we experience loss, it can become a turning point in our beliefs and the places we look to for comfort. This piece reflects on the death of my father when I was ten years old. Growing up, my family was deeply involved in our church community, and I understood the Bible and the teachings of the Christian faith as absolute truths. When my father died, that certainty was shaken. I began to question everything I had believed and found myself turning somewhere very different for comfort.
Not long after his death, my mother and I took a walk along the Mississippi River, where I encountered a beautiful white bird. I later learned that it was a Great Egret. In the midst of my grief, its quiet, breathtaking presence offered me an unexpected sense of reprieve. That encounter became a moment of solace at a time when the beliefs I had once relied upon no longer provided the same sense of certainty or comfort.
