    • “In ‘Indra’s Net’ I wanted to explore the ways in which people build and break boundaries between ourselves and our world. Our natural propensity to create artificial distinctions is eclipsed by our knack for finding connections through the means of vision, empathy, and insight. These are ideas I wanted to express both figuratively and conceptually. The depiction of reflected images within and around figures whose features are at once obscured and exaggerated, whose boundaries are at times undefined as they momentarily merge with their environment, delineates the pathways of our sometimes muddled perception. Contrasting with this is the imagery of fish, whose clear, ever-opened eyes are said to impart perpetual awareness to the unconscious. Fish, along with birds, are early and unambiguous indicators of the state of the environment which surrounds us, bestowing upon us a silent foresight.

This leads me to a desire to express themes of transformation, waking up, and coming into being. I believe the intrinsic need to communicate with, and find a connection to, the world around us plays a major role in my work.” ~Jaclyn Alderete
