In 2022, I exhibited a drawing in a Beautiful Bizarre Magazine curated show “Halcyon Days” at Modern Eden Gallery. In this drawing titled “The Call”, a woman was holding a blue paper plane in her hands and was about to release it in the wind. The piece was about a call-to-action, using imagination as a powerful tool in this uncertain world. It suggested that we should have a sense of hope no matter how hopeless we might feel from time to time. Maybe the airplane would find a right person who would be able to respond to the message.
My drawing “Soft Landing” in this show is a corresponding piece to “The Call”. This drawing depicts someone receiving a message carried on the blue paper plane. This piece was influenced by my experience of visiting Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland earlier this year. The background of this drawing was taken from the texture of the floor inside a building labeled “Extermination” in the camp. Seeing a trace of the unfathomable cruelty, this experience made me shudder about our capability of committing an atrocity of this magnitude and the ease with which we could slide into it.
Our world is a scary place and there is so much darkness around us. I created this piece as a reminder that we need to have a glimmer of hope in the new dark age we live in.
