Sacred Ordinary is a hand-built porcelain bouquet in which pencils, scissors, and a paintbrush take the place of stems. Bound together by an oversized ribbon, they give rise to flowers, vegetables, and small, improbable forms. A thimble becomes the center of a lace-petaled flower; a thinly sliced apple becomes a butterfly, its antennae extending into delicate stems. Each element draws on the visual language of familiar objects, bringing them together in a composition that is at once recognizable and quietly strange.
Made of pigmented porcelain, the sculpture depends on the precision of handbuilding and the careful treatment of its surfaces. The work brings together the botanical, the domestic, and the tools of making, with a delicate, feminine sensibility. Unexpected combinations unsettle the boundaries between the living and the manufactured, the useful and the decorative.
The bouquet arrives unexpectedly, carrying a gesture of affection that needs no particular occasion or explanation. In Sacred Ordinary, this familiar offering takes an uncanny form. The bouquet's flowers are assembled from objects associated with everyday work, transforming the tools of making into something to be received, contemplated, and cherished.
