"Matilda" is loosely inspired by Empress Matilda, who was married at age 11 and should have been the first queen regnant of England way back in the 12th century, but who was thwarted mostly because of her gender. But more than an a-historical portrait very loosely based on one of history's "She Wolves" (as she has been called), this is a painting steeped in thoughts about patriarchy, dominion, feminine vs. masculine power, female fortitude and bravery, youth and aging, the impermanence of time, childbearing, winners and losers, and a hefty dose of romanticized melodrama with a dash of the mundane. And of course it glimmers.
