It was such a rewarding experience to open our annual portrait show on Saturday evening. Thank you! It truly felt like a milestone, a moment to take stock, and a chance to re-engage as a community. We were especially thrilled to introduce 40 new artists exhibiting with us for the first time, many of whom were able to be in attendance.
All works are now online, and we are pleased to announce that starting June 30 we'll be extending our hours to 12–5 pm, Wednesday through Saturday. Note that the gallery will be closed for summer break next Saturday, June 26. If you'd like to visit, you can always schedule an appointment!
Since 2011 we have curated this annual exhibition in celebration of the painted portrait. Over the last decade we’ve featured some of the top contemporary painters of today, and presented themes that pushed the boundaries of traditional and academic portraiture. This year we opened up our invitational format to seek new submissions from our extended community of artists. We were both overwhelmed and honored by the response we received. We are thrilled to welcome 80 exhibiting artists, including 45 new artists to Modern Eden who will be exhibiting with us for the first time! The Portrait Show IX is on view through July 3, 2021 at Modern Eden Gallery 1100 Sutter St. in San Francisco.

In this interview, Alexandra Manukyan reflects on the dualities that define her practice: the weight of human grief carried through the female body, the interplay between concealment and truth, and the evolving tension between timeless tradition and our rapidly shifting digital age. What emerges is a portrait of an artist who paints not just figures, but the human condition itself—layered, vulnerable, and endlessly resilient.
