Emmylou Smith is a U.S.-based illustrator and fine artist with a B.F.A. and M.A. in Illustration. After five years of teaching as an adjunct art instructor and two years as a freelance graphic artist, she transitioned from digital media to exhibiting traditional watercolor paintings. She developed a practice inspired by folklore, mythology, nature, and real historical figures with an aim to revive history for the modern eye.

Emmylou works with watercolor on mineral ground boards and seals each piece with wax so it can be viewed without glass. The wax-sealed mineral ground surface gives her paintings the texture and presence of fresco secco, allowing viewers to experience these historical tales as both timeless and immediate.  Each painting serves as a tribute to our past, ensuring that even as time marches on, these stories remain alive.
