Nine of Wands: Order, discipline an unassailable position. Any opposition will be defeated. Courage in the face of attack or adversity and a stability that cannot be removed. Good health.
Warholian and Modern Eden Gallery have come together in to present “Tarot: Art of Fortune” a modern day reinterpretation of the classic intuitive “fortune telling” card deck. The show features some of the best emerging names in the gallery scene today as curated by Warholian’s founder Michael Cuffe.
Although it’s roots may seem occult, Tarot was originally developed as a pack of playing cards in 15th century Europe to play French Tarot or Italian Tarocchini. Over time, individuals in the intuitive and early psychic communities began to adopt the cards as use as a tool to “read” an individual and offer spiritual guidance. Today Tarot has become more widely accepted as a way for individuals to find direction in the bustle of a modern world. With the availability of decks ranging from artistic to commercial, tarot has become a personalized standard of home libraries everywhere.
For “Tarot: Art of Fortune” we’ve asked some of the top contemporary artists to reimagine their favorite card from a standard deck, into a work of art based on the imagery and symbolism present. “Tarot: Art of Fortune” features an amazing array of established artists that have been individually selected as important figures in emerging art movements at this time.
I attended the The California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland California, where I majored in drawing and painting with a stong emphasis on portraiture. I graduated in1987. Aside from thirty years as a portrait painter, I have an extensive background as a textile artist, and have shown my work in major galleries and taught classes in color and composition in that field. That said, portraiture is my first love. Being a confirmed animal lover, it seems natural to use them in as my subjects. In my animal portrait work, I like to bring my background in textiles to play by creating pictures that are boldly patterned and visually arresting. I don’t work by any formula - each of my paintings is very carefully thought out so as to show the individual dog or cat to the most striking advantage I can think up.
My home/studio is located in the town of Healdsburg in the Califorinia wine country, and living here with me are my husband, son, mom in law, three dogs, two cats and one snake. Whew! The guy I'm holding in my self portrait is my beloved dog/muse Georgie. Georgie and my other two dogs, Pixel and Boo are rarely more than a few yards away when I am working.
Aside from art, I have a great love of and commitment to animal welfare. Visit my rescue page to learn more about this aspect of my work!
