Beyond the Gardens Twilight

Christopher Bales is a mixed media assemblage artist born in Sacramento, California, whose intricate, narrative-driven works blend sculpture, painting, and found objects into richly detailed compositions. After earning an Associate of Arts degree from American River College in 1985, followed by further study in figure drawing and painting at California State University, Bales completed a B.F.A. at California College of the Arts in 1988, where he pursued an individualized program spanning drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. He has been exhibiting his work throughout California since 1986, transitioning from two-dimensional practices to assemblage sculpture in 1989. Bales’ work is characterized by its ornate, devotional quality, often evoking cabinet-like structures filled with symbolic figures, mechanical elements, and carefully constructed environments that invite close, contemplative viewing.
