When I received the theme for this exhibit, I knew I had to create a piece to honor my faithful studio dog Tyrion. Tyrion has been with me since a puppy and is a constant joyful and calming presence. Whenever I feel stressed or anxious, is it reassuring to know that he is there. It only felt right to portray him in paper since his favorite thing is to be in the paper studio. I aimed to capture the soulful human-like expression I see in Tyrion’s face. For this piece I combined several layers of lace-like hand cut paper to achieve a sculptural effect. I crafted an intricate hand cut border in a pattern to compliment the movement of Tyrion’s fur. I hand dyed papers to get the correct tones I was looking for. This piece contains around 14 layers of hand cut paper.
